Jenna Magness, a Michigan State graduate and six-time All-American who recently turned professional and signed with adidas and Boston Athletic Association, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her decision to be represented by Hawi Keflezighi and join B.A.A. and be coached by Mark Carroll. Magness, 23, examines being joined in the new B.A.A. signing class by former Minnesota standouts and Big Ten rivals, twin sisters Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz, in addition to having the opportunity to be teammates with veterans Erika Kemp, Abbey Wheeler and Annie Rodenfels. She revisits first being approached by Carroll during the indoor season and how important it was for Magness to take her time during the evaluation process before making her selection following the USATF Championships in June. Magness, the only female athlete in NCAA Division 1 to earn All-America first-team honors at each of her final six career championship events, reflects on her consistency in the postseason and how she overcame challenges in her final outdoor season to produce her best finish of third place June 10 in the 10,000-meter final in a personal-best 32:59.96 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. She also analyzes her lifetime-best 15:26.21 performance April 22 in the 5,000 in Virginia, which helped her qualify for the USATF Championships, and the lessons she learned from her 18th-place effort June 26 at Hayward Field. Magness previews her move to Boston in September and explains her potential opportunities to pursue interests off the track in chemical engineering after earning her degrees in the field at Michigan State. She speaks about the history and tradition of B.A.A. in road events and looking forward to exploring new racing opportunities, along with continuing to compete in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. Magness also analyzes the success of former Michigan State teammate Morgan Beadlescomb, who is training professionally with Very Nice Track Club in Michgian, and how he was one of two collegiate competitors to earn All-America first-team recognition in all six Division 1 finals the past two years, along with Adriaan Wildschutt of Florida State. She also expresses gratitude for Michigan State coach Lisa Breznau and helping her develop from a walk-on into one of the most decorated athletes in program history following the retirement of coach Walt Drenth.
