Michigan State graduate student-athlete and six-time All-American Morgan Beadlescomb, who placed in the top 10 in NCAA Division 1 cross country, indoor 5,000 and outdoor 5,000 finals in 2021, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss his participation Jan. 29 in the Dr. Sander men's 3,000 meters at the 114th Millrose Games in his debut at The Armory in New York. Beadlescomb is scheduled to be joined by collegiate competitors Charles Hicks of Stanford and Iowa State's Wesley Kiptoo, along with recent NCAA champions and professional athletes Conner Mantz, Cooper Teare, Cole Hocker and Geordie Beamish. He shares his excitement for being selected to be part of such an elite field, along with the opportunity to eclipse the 8-minute barrier for the first time in his career and produce a mark that hopefully qualifies for the Division 1 indoor championship meet March 11-12 at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Beadlescomb also expresses his appreciation for the range of his fellow competitors from 1,500 to 10,000 meters on the track, in addition to Mantz winning the USATF Half Marathon Championships in his debut after capturing his second straight Division 1 cross country crown Nov. 20 at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla. He also examines the depth of the WHOOP Men's Wanamaker Mile, which includes New Zealand standout and representative of Tracksmith and Very Nice Track Club Nick Willis pursuing a sub-4 performance for the 20th consecutive year. Willis will also be joined in the race by recent Michigan prep standout and adidas professional Hobbs Kessler, which Beadlescomb looks forward to watching, along with reigning Olympic 800-meter champion Athing Mu scheduled to compete in the WHOOP Women's Wanamaker Mile. Beadlescomb speaks about the experience he gained from competing against Paul Chelimo and other professional athletes at the U.S. Olympic Trials, the second time he had an opportunity to race the Olympian, along with the XC Town USA Meet of Champions, presented by The Garrett Companies, in November 2020 at the LaVern Gibson course in Terre Haute, Ind. He analyzes the depth of the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Feb. 25-26 at the SPIRE Institute in Ohio, and the potential for Michigan State to qualify a distance medley relay for the Division 1 indoor final, with the improvement of John Petruno in the middle-distance events, and how much that would mean to Beadlescomb to have that be part of his career legacy with the Spartans. Beadlescomb also looks forward to completing his Masters degree in electrical engineering in May and the opportunities to compete as a post-collegiate athlete, including at the U.S. Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
